IUFoST Announces Lifetime Achievement and Young Researcher Award Winners
30 January 2024 – The International Union of Food Science and Technology (IUFoST) today announces the winners of two prestigious awards recognizing outstanding achievements by food scientists at different stages in their careers. Dr. Fereidoon Shahidi is the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award and the Young Researcher Award is being presented to Dr. Lutz Grossmann. The recognition of these two outstanding scientists will take place during the 22nd World Congress of Food Science and Technology, Rimini, Italy in September.
The Lifetime Achievement Award honours Dr. Fereidoon Shahidi for his pre-eminence in and contributions to the field of Food Science and Technology, especially in the field of nutraceuticals and functional foods, over his career. Recipients of this award have made significant contributions to scientific knowledge with impact in areas such as food safety; food quality; human nutrition; product, process, and package innovation; food security (availability, accessibility, affordability); consumer acceptability; communication of food science and technology and regulations, or a combination of them; actions to improve Food Science and Technology education or dissemination in the country and around the world.
Dr. Shahidi was nominated by his peers who highlighted “his outstanding contributions and impressive achievements in Food Science research and education, his unwavering efforts in building and consolidating a healthy and strong international community of Food Science and Technology”. Another cited Dr. Shahidi’s “record of achievement in communicating to and for the scientific community, governments and the public in the immense volume of his publication record. He has more than 1,000 publications (books, chapters and more than 700 peer reviewed journal articles)”. Dr. Shahidi's peers conclude that 'his research and published books have contributed profoundly to our understanding of the composition and properties of many raw materials and processed foods". Honouring these exceptional career achievements and the huge contributions he has made to fundamental and applied aspects of Food Science, Dr. Shahidi is the recipient of the IUFoST Lifetime Achievement Award.
While the Lifetime Achievement Award acknowledges a body of work that has influenced the world of Food Science and Technology over the course of a career, the Young Researcher Award puts the spotlight on the initial phases of a career in Food Science and Technology. It recognizes the recipient’s potential to make outstanding scientific contributions to the field of Food Science and Technology and the potential for future scientific leadership.
Dr. Lutz Grossmann, Young Researcher Award Winner, is recognized for his outstanding work in the areas of alternative protein extraction and purification, protein functionality, sustainable food processing and food design that are already nationally and Internationally recognized.
Dr. Grossmann's nominators cite that "during his relatively short career, Professor Grossmann has already demonstrated that he is an outstanding researcher". “A major emphasis of his research is to create a more healthy, sustainable, affordable and resilient food supply, which will be critical for the future." “Professor Grossman is a highly creative, productive and dedicated research scientist who is carrying out cutting edge research in a variety of important areas aimed at improving food quality, health, and sustainability.”
IUFoST congratulates both Dr. Fereidoon Shahidi and Dr. Lutz Grossmann on their outstanding achievements.
