IUFoST happenings -  World Food Prize, Codex, UNIDO, Task Force on Food Processing

This special announcement is to make you aware of several recent key Union activities, to alert you to a series of events in the next short while of significance, and to welcome you to comment and participate.

 

IUFoST and UNIDO sign agreement

World Without Hunger, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) high level Summit takes place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia next week from 5 - 7 November.  During this Summit, IUFoST will sign the official agreement with UNIDO to launch the long-term partnership in projects and related work between our two organizations. IUFoST President Professor Samuel Godefroy will speak during the ceremonies and Academy President 2016-2018 Professor Ruth Oniang’o will join in the three-day programme. 

 

Ongoing outcomes of the IUFoST Task Force on Food Processing for Nutrition, Diet and Health:

A series of IUFoST Scientific Roundtable Discussions, regionally focussed, are being held during November related to the work and outcomes of the Food Processing Task Force. In addition, several other meetings are presenting IUFoST work in this area in the next few days and weeks. We welcome your involvement in all of these and hope many of you already working with IUFoST globally may wish to join the IUFoST Scientific Communicators Group (contact IUFoST Secretariat: Attention TF Food Processing Communicators) to articulate and disseminate the messages of sound science.

  • 4 November - Webinar presented by the Institute for Advancement of Food and Nutrition Sciences (IAFNS), Washington, DC, USA -  November 4, from 3:00-3:45 p.m. ET North America for a report from the IUFoST Task Force on Processing for Nutrition, Diet and Health.

  • 14 November - Plenary “Refining the Role of Processing in Food Classification Systems: The IUFoST Formulation & Processing Classification (IF&PC) Approach” is to be presented at the EFFoST (European Federation of Food Science and Technology (Regional body of IUFoST) annual conference, Bruges Belgium, on 14 November (details: https://effostconference.com/).
     
  • 21 November - Roundtable on Ultra-Processed Food organized by ALACCTA (Central and South American Regional body of IUFoST) and Fundación Triptolemos (founded in Barcelona, Spain).  Presentation on IUFoST Task Force results and outcomes. To be conducted in Spanish and English (and English Sub-titles).

  • In planning: IUFoST Scientific Roundtables on Food Processing featuring inter-disciplinary aspects, global experts with regional focus for ASEAN region, Western Africa, Near East, East Asia. 

 

WORLD FOOD PRIZE recognizes Academy Fellows



Des Moines, Iowa, USA - October 29, 2024 - Charles Aworh, Immediate Past President of IAFoST and distinguished Nigerian scientist  (pictured left) was honoured with Top Agri-Food Pioneer Award at the World Food Prize celebrations this week.  Dr. Aworh is renowned for his expertise in food processing and preservation technologies. His research focuses on enhancing the safety, shelf life, and quality of traditional African foods, significantly contributing to food security and rural development in Sub-Saharan Africa.  He has played a key role in advancing indigenous food processing methods and is dedicated to mentoring the next generation of scientists. Widely published, his work bridges academic research and practical applications, making a lasting impact on the field of food science and the broader African agricultural landscape.

Shenggen Fan, FIAFoST and one of our Distinguished Lecturers at our World Food Congresses was the Facilitator of the session on "Strategic Investments in Nutrition: Now and for the Next Generations" at the World Food Prize Foundation Borlaug Dialogue on Tuesday, 29 October 2024.

IUFoST contributes to Codex Food Labelling Meeting

Quebec City, Canada – October 27, 2024 – Codex Committee on Food Labelling, 48th Session, accepted and thanked IUFoST for its comments on the proposed revisions to the Codex General Standard for the Labelling of Prepackaged Foods, specifically focusing on allergen labeling and precautionary allergen warnings.
