Quebec City, Canada – October 27, 2024 – The International Union of Food Science and Technology (IUFoST) today presented critical commentary on the proposed revisions to the Codex General Standard for the Labelling of Prepackaged Foods, specifically focusing on allergen labeling and precautionary allergen warnings.
These proposals, currently at Step 7 and Step 4 of the Codex Alimentarius review process, aim to enhance the clarity and consistency of allergen information provided to consumers on food packaging. The IUFoST's remarks were delivered at the Codex Committee on Food Labelling’s 48th Session, held from October 27 to November 1 in Quebec City. This session gathers international experts, policymakers, and stakeholders to address updates in global food labeling standards, with a key focus on allergen labeling which impacts consumer safety and informed food choices.
The revisions, which are part of Codex’s commitment to food safety, address the urgent need for transparent and uniform allergen labeling practices. They include both mandatory allergen declarations and precautionary allergen labeling (PAL) for potential cross-contact allergens. The IUFoST's contributions will help shape the labeling standards that impact allergen-sensitive consumers worldwide.
As the 48th session progresses, Codex Alimentarius will continue to review feedback from stakeholders, including IUFoST, to move these provisions closer to finalization.
