AAU and IUFoST Roundtable, Leadership and Capacity Building in Food Science and Technology in Africa, 15 February, 2024

Association of African Universities (AAU) is the organization responsible for enhancing the quality and relevance of higher education in Africa and strengthen its contribution to Africa’s development. In achieving this goal, AAU remains the leading advocate for higher education in Africa, with the capacity to provide support for its member institutions in meeting national, continental, and global needs. IUFoST and AAU have entered into a long term work plan together to strengthen Education, Training and Capacity Building.

The first regional webinar on capacity development, coordinated by IUFoST-AAU, will be held 15 February 2024 via Zoom. The virtual workshop will feature plenary sessions with simultaneous interpretation (English, French and Arabic).

The Agenda includes the following speakers and participants (not in order): Professor O.B. Oyewole, Professor of Food Science and Technology and Secretary-General of the AAU introducing the African Research Innovation and Development Networks - Food Science and Technology Network in Africa;  Professor Charles Aworh, President of the International Academy of Food Science and Technology (IAFoST) speaking about mentoring.  Professor Ruth Oniang’o, IUFoST Lifetime Achievement Award Winner follows with a talk on promoting regional collaboration and partnerships in  Food Science and Technology. Digitalisation and Virtual Learning in Food Science and Technology is presented by Dr. Paul Singh, IAFoST Fellow and Distinguished Professor, University of California-Davis. This is followed by the IUFoST Focus on Africa, presented by IUFoST President,  reflecting on the purposes and objectives of the joint agreement with the Association of African Universities.

Last, this dynamic programme brings together a team of expert resource from IUFoST and IAFoST to join the other IUFoST and AAU leaders to formulate a plan of action regarding academic focus areas, strategies.  These distinguished experts include Mukund Karwe, PhD, Distinguished Professor (Food Engineering) Rutgers University; Syed S.H. Precision Nutrition and Food Science Strategies to Combat Persistent Metabolic Challenges Associated with Long-COVID,  subject of upcoming IUFoST SRD

The next IUFoST Scientific Roundtable Discussion (SRD) "Precision Nutrition and Food Science Strategies to Combat Persistent Metabolic Challenges Associated with Long-COVID" is scheduled for 29 February, from 07.30 ET (North America) GMT -5.

Nutritional intervention is an important aspect of recovery from and management of post-acute sequelae of COVID-19 (PASC), or long COVID,  that often concomitantly presents severe inflammation, malnutrition, and sarcopenia, especially in those with pre-existing health conditions, and typically at risk of adverse health events, such as among pediatric populations, the elderly, and women of childbearing age. An adequate food supply and availability of foods that contain an array of potential bioactives may be critical in reducing risks associated with PASC, the ongoing global health crisis. Expert speakers include Roger Clemens, DrPH, Adj Professor, USC School of Pharmacy: Narain Naidu, PhD, Director-General, Mission-COVID, Global Nutrition Healthcare Council, Pingfan Rao, PhD, Fuzhou University; Chin-Kun Wang, Chung Shan Medical University; Jailene de Sousa Aquino, PhD, Federal University of Paraiba; Jun Nishihira, MD, PhD, Hokkaido Information University.
