Precision Nutrition and Food Science Strategies to Combat Persistent Metabolic Challenges Associated with Long-COVID,  subject of upcoming IUFoST SRD

The next IUFoST Scientific Roundtable Discussion (SRD) "Precision Nutrition and Food Science Strategies to Combat Persistent Metabolic Challenges Associated with Long-COVID" is scheduled for 29 February, from 07.30 ET (North America) GMT-5.

SARS‐CoV‐2, the etiological agent of COVID-19, is devoid of any metabolic capacity; therefore, the viral pathogen must hijack host cellular metabolic machinery for its progeny and propagation.  Emerging clinical data suggest that about 25-70% of virus-free COVID-19 survivors continue to sustain viral-induced human metabolic reprogramming dysregulation (HMR/D) and exhibit a wide range of symptoms that are persistent, exacerbated, or new ‘onset’ clinical manifestations, collectively termed as post-acute sequelae of COVID-19 (PASC) or long COVID.  Nutritional intervention is an important aspect of recovery from and management of PASC. An adequate food supply and availability of foods that contain an array of potential bioactives may be critical in reducing risks associated with PASC, the ongoing global health crisis.   This Scientific Roundtable Discussion (SRD) looks at Precision Nutrition and Food Science Strategies to Combat Persistent Metabolic Challenges Associated with Long-COVID.

Association of African Universities/IUFoST Scientific Roundtable Discussion

Association of African Universities/IUFoST Scientific Roundtable was a great success.
Led by AAU Secretary-General Olusola Oyewole and IUFoST President Aman Wirakartakusumah, the speakers highlighted the areas of interest and interconnectivity between the two organisations – preparing leaders, providing mentors, advancing educational interests and assessing future needs – encouraging and enriching research and improving the infrastructures needed to achieve the stated goals. This introductory Roundtable served as the first in a planned series to  address specific focus areas and targeted plans for action between AAU/IUFoST educators and scientists. Thanks are expressed to the Co Chairs Olusola Oyewole and Aman Wirakartakusumah and to all speakers and participants in this Roundtable, including Charles Aworh, Ruth Oniang’o, Paul Singh, Samuel Godefroy, Mukund Karwe, Syed Rizvi, Adewale Obadina and Felicia Nkrumah Kuagbedzi for their leadership in steering the way forward for this workshop series in the AAU/IUFoST collaboration. Stay tuned for next steps!

Join us for the SRD on  the Role of Processed Foods in Sustainable Development Goals - an interdisciplinary approach towards Food and Nutrition

Processed food is linked to two of the sustainable development goals, zero hunger and good health  & well being. Food processing has been concerned with increasing palatability and shelf life, while ensuring food safety. The use and demand for processed food is increasing day by day. This has also brought  concern to examining both health aspects and their environmental footprint at the same time. The risks associated with processed food are primarily determined by the degree to which the food has been altered.  Non-communicable diseases are the most common public health impact of processed foods. It is felt enough consideration has not been paid to the public health consequences of processed food and there are research gaps in addressing the problems in food processing to overcome the challenges in addressing the health aspects of consumers.  IUFoST brings together Sir Charles Godfray Director of the Oxford Martin School, Oxford University, Frederick Kongongo, United Nations International Development Organization (UNIDO) Agribusiness Officer and other experts to deliberate on the issues and to suggest a way forward in a multi-disciplinary context.
