Dr. Gluckman will then join the Opening for Singapore as New Zealand (hosts of Congress 2020 cancelled due to the pandemic) officially hands over to the 21st World Congress.

A record number of competition entries have been received and the Young Scientist Award Winners have been decided now by the global jury. These winners, put forward by IUFoST national bodies as the best in young science – are from all parts of the world. They have been invited to speak after plenary sessions during the congress.  More about this special group in our next issue.  Congratulations to all the finalists for the competitions for Food Sustainability, Food Safety, Undergraduate Product Development, Quiz Bowl, Global Industry Awards.  Finalists in the Product Development Competition face stiff competition, with the number of excellent and innovative products under consideration.  The Congress Awards Ceremonies to celebrate all the Competition winners will be on 3 November.

In response to the growing need for edible proteins in the world, the IUFoST Scientific Council is organising a roundtable to discuss pathways forward to the future. The sustainable alternative protein sources continue to grow in response to the  increasing world population that is expected to exceed 9 billion by the year 2050. In this connection, proteins from plants, insects, and microbial sources as well as by-products in a circular economy have already manifested in the novel food revolution. The roundtable brings together internationally renowned experts to discuss the state-of-the-art status of the current situation with an insight into the future. Speakers include Dr. Julian McClements, University of Massachusetts, Janitha Wanasundara, Agriculture and Agri Food Canada, and Jaykant Yadav, from Central University of Rajasthan, India. The Roundtable is set for Thursday, September 22nd from 08.00 to 10.00 ET.
