The International Review of Food Science and Technology: Relaunch
The International Review of Food Science and Technology (IRFS&T) is the annual publication of the International Union of Food Science & Technology (IUFoST). The International Review of Food Science and Technology covers all current trends in science and regulatory affairs like nanotechnology or health claims and questions of daily practice: aspects of production, processes and packaging in the food and beverage industries and their component suppliers are on the list of topics. The International Review of Food Science and Technology is read by IUFoST members and the audience attending international conferences and trade fairs world wide like engineers, product developers, managing directors, factory managers, and managers in R&D, project planning, production, and marketing. The needs of societies in different parts of the world with specific conditions of culture, economic power and demographics are described by local opinion leaders. The new relaunched publication has a higher print circulation, and includes a digital edition, bonus distribution and a redsigned layout.

Young Scientists to Address the World Community of Food Science and Technology at the 14th IUFoST World Congress in Shanghai
Nominations are invited by the global federation of IUFoST national scientific members (Adhering Bodies) for the Young Scientists contest. The young scientists, in their first post-doctorate position, will submit abstracts and statements of recommendation from their professors to their Adhering Body. Multiple nominations may be made to the Adhering Body but only one nomination may be put forward from each Adhering Body to IUFoST. Seven young scientists will then be chosen to address a global audience with his/her research, following a plenary speaker, for a duration of 15 minutes. He/she will then join over 2000 other food scientists and technologists to experience this global event in the unmatched setting of Shanghai, China at the 14th annual IUFoST World Congress.

IUFoST Global Food Industry Awards
IUFoST invites its Federation Members (Adhering Bodies) to recommend national industry candidates for the 1st IUFoST Global Food Industry Awards to be presented at the IUFoST World Congress in Shanghai, China, 19-23 October 2008.
Categories:
- Influential food product in the market that best displays these qualities:
- product and/or process innovation including industrialization of traditional foods
- package innovation, with specifics on the innovative part of the packaging and why it is important
- Communicating science-related knowledge with consumer, including marketing campaign to target audience relating to improving consumers¡¦ lifestyle (e.g. children, teens, adults, seniors)
To submit a nomination (two nominations per category for each country are invited): The IUFoST Adhering Body will forward a brief description in point form to IUFoST (see
accompanying form) of 500 words or less in support of the two nominations in each category (therefore a total of 6 nominations from each Adhering Body) and how they qualify according to the specifications above, combined with a photograph of the product
and including: When product was introduced, Innovative features of the product, Why the product is important
The full name, address of the nominated company and principal contacts should be included as well as the name and contact details of the Adhering Body submitting the nomination.
DEADLINE for RECEIPT OF NOMINATIONS: 1 September 2008
10 winners in 3 categories that best fit the category characteristics will be selected for industry prizes at the IUFoST World Congress.

Using Food Science and Technology to Improve Nutrition and Promote National Development - IUFoST Food Science and Technology Handbook
The IUFoST Food Science and Technology handbook, Using Food Science and Technology to improve Nutrition and Promote National Development is now available. The idea for the handbook arose at the 13th World Congress in Nantes, France in 2006. The editors hope that the handbook will show, through the use of case studies, how the application of food science and technology has improved nutrition and promoted national development in developing countries. The IUFoST handbook is intended to transmit useful information on applications of food science and technology to those affiliated to both developed and developing countries. We hope that making the chapters freely available for download will ensure the widest possible audience.

IUFoST Announces New Fellows of the International Academy
of Food Science and Technology (IAFoST)
The International Union of Food Science and Technology (IUFoST) is proud to present the sixth class of outstanding food scientists and technologists to be elected to the International Academy of Food Science and Technology (IAFoST). These 25 new Fellows will be inducted at the 14th World Congress of Food Science and Technology in Shanghai, China, October 2008. IAFoST collectively forms a pool of scientific expertise in food science and technology from which IUFoST draws non-aligned expert advice on scientific matters. Fellows
represent no organization or country but serve as independent persons to work and promote high standards of ethics and scientific endeavors. They are at the forefront of IUFoST, helping to strengthen global food science and technology for humanity.

2008 World Congress News: Distinguished Lecture by Professor M.S. Swaminathan
IUFoST is pleased to announce that world famous agricultural scientist, Professor M. S. Swaminathan (Father of the Green Revolution in India) has accepted the invitation to attend the IUFoSTWorld Congress, and to deliver the Distinguished Lecture for the Congress. Professor M.S. Swaminathan has been acclaimed by TIME magazine as one of the twenty most influential Asians of the 20th century and has been described by Javier Perez de Cuellar, Secretary General of the United Nations, as "a living legend who will go into the annals of history as a world scientist of rare distinction". A plant geneticist by training, Professor Swaminathan's contributions to the agricultural renaissance of India have led to his being widely referred to as the scientific leader of the green revolution movement. His advocacy of sustainable agriculture leading to an ever-green revolution makes him an acknowledged world leader in the field of sustainable food security.

If you are involved in food industry management or R & D sector, in the classroom or in other areas of food science and technology in Sub-Saharan Africa, we invite you to partner with us to provide expert resource by reviewing the modules being developed, identifying location-specific examples and by working alongside us as a Module Development Co-ordinator. As SSA coordinator, you will be asked to review the modules, according to your areas of expertise, to identify location-specific examples of agricultural and agri-food practices, to arrange for video of examples of these in operation and to commit to active engagement throughout the delivery of the pilot project. With this invitation, IUFoST offers you the opportunity to be involved in an important and needed project and to work with other food scientists and technologists of international reputation.
