Roger ClemensPresiding Officer: Dr Roger Clemens

Dr. Clemens is an engaging speaker, critical thinker and visionary leader whose professional contributions have been rewarded by being honored as a fellow in four scientific societies, including Institute of Food Technologists, International Academy of Food Science and Technology, American College of Nutrion, and American Society for Nutrition. In addiyion to serving on the 2010 USDA Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee, he is a former president of the Institute of Food Technologists, and chaired several divisions and sections within IFT, including nutrition and toxicology.

He is also a dynamic leader within the American Society of Nutrition, Society of Toxicology and American College of Toxicology. He is prominent among media outlets and across scientific journals. Trained in scientific communications, he has participated in more than 500 interviews among domestic and international health news outlets. He co‐founded the Food, Medicine and Health column nearly 14 years ago.

Importantly, he is a visionary leader. A critical consideration in his vision involves higher education and the obstacles frequently
presented by the changing federal and international landscapes. He recently returned from Ireland and Ethiopia with the charge of developing and delivering collaborative opportunities with academic institutions, regulatory agencies, and food industry entrepreneurs.

Ruth Oniang'oPast Presiding Officer: Ruth Oniang’o

Ruth Oniang’o is Professor of Food and Nutritional Sciences. She is educated in the USA and Kenya (Washington State University Pullman and University of Nairobi), founder and Editor-in-Chief of the African Journal of Food, Agriculture, Nutrition and Development (AJFAND), founder and Director of Rural Outreach Africa, an NGO working to uplift the lives of resource poor smallholder farmers, especially women, and creating jobs for the young. She has served in advisory capacity for various UN agencies, the World Bank, Kenya Government and Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. She is board member of Nestle, a global food, beverage and wellness company, she has served on IRRI, CIAT, IFDC, ACIAR and micronutrient initiative boards and as Vice-Chair of GFAR (Global Forum for Agricultural Research); now serves on Montpellier Panel, and chairs Sasakawa Africa Association and Sasakawa Africa Fund for Extension Education Boards. Ruth is also a winner of two national medals in Kenya, 2014 IFAMA (International Food and Agribusiness Management Association) award for a lifetime of distinguished service and 2014 Fortune magazine’s ’30 Women Achievers’ globally in Food and Drink.  Ruth is President of the International Academy of Food Science and Technology (IAFoST).

Aman WirakartakusumahPresiding Officer Elect – Dr Aman Wirakartakusumah

Dr. Aman Wirakartakusumah, an IAFoST Fellow, is a scientific leader, experienced administrator, a diplomat at the highest levels internationally and is known as a person who is dedicated to service above self who brings people and viewpoints together.

He has a strong grasp of IUFoST’s issues and is committed, passionate and has unbounded drive in everything he does for the Union. He was Indonesian Ambassador to UNESCO, Rector of two Indonesian universities, and highly‐regarded chair of IUFoST’s Education Committee and the World Bank‐initiated Global Food Safety Curricula Initiative. He is a member of the Indonesia Academy of Sciences, has led Indonesia in establishing educational standards and is actively engaged with ASEAN/APEC countries in implementing food safety policies, measures and
educational standardisation.

Prof. Aman has received numerous awards in his country and from around the world and is known and universally respected by many IUFoST Adhering Bodies. As Education Committee Chair, his advocacy for IUFoST demonstrated his interest in the welfare of young food scientists.
Prof. Aman’s experience, leadership and diplomatic skills will significantly contribute to the Academy by strengthening the science, collaborating with international bodies, and generating the inclusiveness needed to successfully fulfill IAFoST’s mission and vision.

Jian ChenCouncilor: Dr Jian Chen

Dr. Jian Chen is a Distinguished Professor and President of Jiangnan University, the home of the top‐ranked Food Science College in China (>200 food science faculty and 2400 students). He is also the Director of National Engineering Laboratory for Cereal Fermentation Technology and past Director of National Key Lab of Food Science & Technology.

Prof. Chen has made extraordinary contributions to the advancement of food biotechnology & bioengineering, winning the National Award for Science and Technology Progress and the National Award for Technology Invention. He was elected IAFoST Fellow in 2012 and elected Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering in 2017 (the highest honor for scientists & technologists in China). As a leading national and international food scientist and administrator, Dr. Chen has served as the Vice President of Chinese Institute of Food Science & Technology (CIFST) for 10 years and is the current Editor‐in‐Chief for the international journal Food Bioscience. He also helped organize major IUFoST‐CIFST joint iniatves and other international conferences over the past 20 years. Prof. Chen is passionate about IUFoST and wishes to join the IAFoST leadership team to further strengthen the commitment to global food science and technology for humanity and the collaboration among food scientists around the world.

Alan ReillyCouncilor: Dr Alan Reilly

Dr. Alan Reilly was CEO of the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) from 2009 to 2015. Under his leadership, FSAI became one of the most effective food safety agencies in enforcing regulations and coordinating the national food control programme.

Before joining the FSAI in 1999, Alan worked in the Food Safety Programme of the WHO in Geneva, the Natural Resources Institute of University of Greenwich, UK, and as Associate Professor at the College of Fisheries, University of the Philippines. He served on the Advisory Forum of the European Food Safety Authority and the Board of the Irish National Accreditation Board.

Alan is Adjunct Professor at the Institute of Food and Health, University College Dublin and the School of Food Science and Environmental Health, Dublin Institute of Technology. He chairs the Scientific Advisory Board of the European Food Information Council (EUFIC), is an adviser to World Health Organization, and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and is a member of the Advisory Board of the WHO/FAO International Food Safety Authorities Network (INFOSAN). Alan’s passion and mission in life is for safe food and water
for all. He has spent over 40 years working to that end.

Scientific Council Chair: Dr. V Prakash, India

Dr. V. Prakash is currently working as Distinguished Scientist of CSIR-India Food Science, Food Technology, Food Safety, Food and Nutrition Security, Nutraceuticals, Naturals, Nutritionals and Biotechnology and also in his capacity as Hon. Director of Research, Innovation, Development and Management at JSS Mahavidyapeetha at Mysore, India. Dr. Prakash is an IAFoST Fellow and has more than 50 patents to his credit. He is the Fellow of IFT and Vice President of IUNS. In 2014 he was decorated with Life Time Achievement Award of IUFoST at the Montreal Congress.  Dr. Prakash is Chair of the IUFoST World Congress to be held in Mumbai, India 2018.

Mary SchmidlIUFoST President: Dr. Mary Schmidl, USA

Dr. Mary Schmidl is an IAFoST Fellow, Past President of IFT and the former Vice President of Science and Technology for the Humanetics Corporation, where she was responsible for new drug discovery as well as innovative ingredient development along with regulatory affairs. She was the Director of Research, Clinical Division of Novartis (Nestle, Inc.), which manufactures special dietary foods, weight management products, medical food products and medical devices. Prior to her work with Nestle, Dr. Schmidl directed the Nutrition Research Department for AG Bayer and was involved with intravenous feeding systems and medical foods. She is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Food Science and Nutrition at the University of Minnesota where her focus is on obesity, functional foods, dietary supplements and their impact on global public health and wellness. She has commercialized more than 75 new products and authored or co-authored over 100 refereed research papers, magazine articles, patents, book chapters, books.
