European Members Discuss Merger of ICSU and International Social Science Council
IUFoST President Dietrich Knorr participated in the European National Members of the International Council for Science (ICSU) Annual Meeting earlier this month in Riga, hosted by the Latvian Academy of Sciences. As a key agenda item, consideration was given to the draft strategy proposal dated 31 March 2017 for the new Science Council that would result from the merger between the International Council for Science and the International Social Science Council.

Arab Taskforce on Food Safety and Regional Consultation for the Global Food Safety Curricula Initiative (GFSCI)
IUFoST was invited to present to the Arab Taskforce on Food Safety, a steering group of senior officials of the League of Arab States (LAS) (11 countries present); the Arab Industrial Development Mining Organization (AIDMO); the Arab Organization of Agricultural Development (AOAD); and senior representatives of organizations and agencies responsible for Food Safety and Food safety standards in countries of the LAS signatories of the agreement of the Greater Arab Free Trade Area (GAFTA). The ATF’ provides high–level advice and guidance to LAS, AIDMO and AOAD for the enhancement of coordination and harmonization of food safety conformity, assessment and food control systems.
The meeting, held in Amman, Jordan, on May 4, comprised three parts: A regional consultation on the GFSCI and discussion of institutes potentially to be involved in the Centres for Excellence for the IUFoST Master’s Level, Leadership in Food Safety programme; a meeting with United Nations International Development Organisation (UNIDO) representatives regarding cooperation; and presentation to the Arab Taskforce on Food Safety of IUFoST work by IUFoST Governing Council member Dr. Lara Hanna Wakim; brief background by Dr. Gerry Moy, formerly of WHO; and a comprehensive review of the IUFoST GFSCI undergraduate and graduate Food Safety programming with particular emphasis on the Master’s programme and Centres of Excellence by Dr. Mansel Griffiths, co-chair of the IUFoST Initiative.
International Forum on Food Safety 2017
On April 20 and 21, the 8th International Forum on Food Safety under the theme of Food Safety and Health was co-organised by the Chinese Institute of Food Science and Technology (CIFST) and IUFoST, and held in Beijing, China.
The China Food and Drug Administration, China Association for Science and Technology; Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of the People’s Republic of China ((PRC); Ministry of Science and Technology (PRC); Ministry of Agriculture (PRC); Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (PRC); China National Leaders from the China Food and Drug Administration, China Association for Science and Technology; Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of the People’s Republic of China ((PRC); Ministry of Science and Technology (PRC); Ministry of Agriculture (PRC); Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (PRC); China National Light Industry Council spoke to delegates during the Opening Ceremony; attended by other supporting Ministries and Government departments, and the more than 500 representative from over 20 countries and regions.
Sixty-seven internationally renowned experts spoke at the Forum, which also featured two Industry Forums and special awards ceremonies included recognition of members of the Press delivering sound science and the leadership of Peter Ben Embarek, World Health Organisation (and Academy Fellow), in his work for promoting Food Safety globally.
IFST Honorary Fellowship Awarded
Colin Dennis, Fellow of the International Academy of Food Science and Technology (IAFoST), has been awarded Honorary Fellowship by the Institute of Food Science and Technology (IFST). The Honorary Fellowship is awarded to IFST Members and Fellows who have made an extensive personal contribution to the working and progress of the Institute and to the food science and technology profession. IUFoST World Congress of Food Science and Technology, Mumbai, India
The dates for the 2018 World Food Congress have moved. Pre-Congress Working Group and Workshops and associated Adhering Body events are scheduled for October 23, with Congress opening ceremonies taking place on October 24. The Congress ends with the IUFoST General Assembly on October 27. Plans for the programme are well underway and details will be provided as they progress.
