The Governing Council executes the policies as agreed by the Delegates of the National Scientific Bodies (Adhering Bodies). Its responsibilities include authorization to decide on time and place of the World Food Congresses and other events sponsored by IUFoST and to assist host nations in the planning of such events. It acts on IUFoST membership applications. The Governing Council is elected by the voting delegates of the national scientific bodies to direct the affairs of the Union and to work in the best interests of all members of IUFoST, not an individual adhering body.
Governing Council 2016-2018
President – Dr. Dietrich Knorr, Austria
Dietrich Knorr is Professor Emeritus of Technische Universität Berlin and an IAFoST Fellow. He is immediate Past President of the European Federation of Food Science and Technology (EFFoST), the European regional grouping of IUFoST. He has received the EFFoST Lifetime Achievement Award and the ASABE International Food Engineering Award in 2013; the IAEF Life Achievement Award in 2011; and the Nicolas Appert Award in 2003. Dr. Knorr has received the Marcel Loncin Research Prize of the Institute of Food Technologists, the EFFoST Outstanding Research Award, as well as the Alfred-Mehlitz Medaille of the German Association of Food Technologists. Currently serving as the Editor of the Journal Innovative Food Science and Emerging Technologies, Prof. Knorr has published approximately 500 scientific papers supervised approx. 300 Diploma/Master Thesis and approx. 75 PhD theses. He holds 7 patents.
Past President – Dr. Rickey Yada, Canada
Dr. Rickey Yada is currently the Dean of the Faculty of Land and Food Systems and Professor of Food Science at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in Vancouver, British Columbia Canada, and an IAFoST Fellow. Prior to his appointment at UBC, he was a Professor in the Department of Food Science, Chair of the Department of Food Science, Assistant Vice President Research, a Canada Research Chair in Food Protein Structure, the Scientific Director of the Food Institute at the University of Guelph and the Vice Chair of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, Institute of Nutrition, Metabolism and Diabetes. Dr. Yada is the Scientific Director of the Advanced Foods and Materials Canada Network, Member of the Board of Trustees International Life Science Institute – North America, a Fellow of Institute of Food Technologists and the North American Editor for Trends in Food Science and Technology.
President Elect – Dr. Mary Schmidl, USA
Dr. Mary Schmidl is an IAFoST Fellow, Past President of IFT and the former Vice President of Science and Technology for the Humanetics Corporation, where she was responsible for new drug discovery as well as innovative ingredient development along with regulatory affairs. She was the Director of Research, Clinical Division of Novartis (Nestle, Inc.), which manufactures special dietary foods, weight management products, medical food products and medical devices. Prior to her work with Nestle, Dr. Schmidl directed the Nutrition Research Department for AG Bayer and was involved with intravenous feeding systems and medical foods. She is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Food Science and Nutrition at the University of Minnesota where her focus is on obesity, functional foods, dietary supplements and their impact on global public health and wellness. She has commercialized more than 75 new products and authored or co-authored over 100 refereed research papers, magazine articles, patents, book chapters, books.
Scientific Council Chair – Professor Lucia Anelich, South Africa
Professor Lucia Anelich has a PhD in Microbiology and is Extraordinary Associate Professor in the Department of Food Science at Stellenbosch University. She is an IAFoST Fellow and owns her own food safety consulting and training business, Anelich Consulting, which she started in 2011. Prior to that, she established and headed up the Food Safety Initiative at the Consumer Goods Council of South Africa, before which she spent 25 years at the Tshwane University of Technology as Associate Professor and Head of Department Biotechnology and Food Technology. She acts as part-time Executive and Scientific Director of ILSI South Africa (since January 2013), is an Officer of the ICMSF, and is a Trustee of the SAAFoST Foundation.
Secretary General/Treasurer – Judith Meech, Canada
Judith Meech is Secretary-General/Treasurer of IUFoST. She is a Fellow of the International Academy of Food Science and Technology (IAFoST). Among her awards and achievements, she is the recipient of the Chinese Institute of Food Science and Technology Award for Professionalism and Dedication. Judith was elected to the position of Secretary-General/Treasurer in 1999. The General Secretariat was then permanently housed in Canada and IUFoST was incorporated in Canada in 2003. As Secretary-General, Judith oversees the day-to-day operations and financial administration of the Secretariat, works closely with the adhering bodies and working groups that make up the Union, providing support, as requested, to them and to the organizers of the past eight IUFoST World Congresses. Her previous experience included work at Development Forum, a social and economic affairs newspaper of ECOSOC at the United Nations, and for the Senior Political Advisor to the Secretary-General, office of the Secretary-General at the UN Headquarters in New York.
Member – Professor Jose Aquilera, Chile
Professor Jose Aguilera, is Emeritus Professor of Food Engineering at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. A chemical engineer, he is an IAFoST Fellow, holds a MSc. degree in food technology from MIT and a PhD in food science from Cornell University. His research has been focused on the role that food microstructure has in the processing of foods, including areas such as structure-property relationships, modeling microstructural changes in foods, food structuring operations and gastronomic engineering. He is the author of the books Microstructural Principles of Food Processing, Food Materials Science and Edible Structures. Among many distinctions are: a Guggenheim fellowship, the A. von Humboldt Research Prize and the Marcel Loncin Research Prize. In 2010 he was elected to the U.S. National Academy of Engineering.
Member – Darunee Edwards, Thailand
Since 2004, Darunee Edwards has been the President of Food Science and Technology Association of Thailand (FoSTAT). During 2009-11, she was the President of the Federation of Institutes of Food Science and Technology in ASEAN. From 1999 to August 2008, she has served as the Deputy Director of the National Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology. She is an IAFoST Fellow. Recently, she has served on the Executive Committee of the Metrology Association of Thailand; being the vice president of the Agri and Food Business Committee of the Thai Chamber of Commerce; as well as the executive committee of the Agriculture Research Development Agency (Public Organization) under the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives.
Member – Dr. Michael Knowles, Belgium
Dr. Michael Knowles is a pharmacist / medicinal chemist who worked for over 20 years in the UK Government ‘s ‘ Food Science Group ‘ becoming it’s Director and Chief Scientist (Fisheries & Food) . He then joined The Coca-Cola Company , retiring after 22 years as Vice-President Global Scientific & Regulatory Affairs. He’s a Fellow of several scientific societies; a Trustee and past President (Global) of ILSI; Liveryman of the Society of Apothecaries, London; past-chairman of various scientific committees in European food industry trade associations and a past-Chairman of the ETP ‘ Food For Life ‘ . His publications are mainly in the field of food safety and he was Joint-Founding Editor of the Journal of Food Additives & Contaminants and he is an IAFoST Fellow.
Member – Rosemary Maguire, South Africa
Rosemary Maguire has been involved in the South African Food Industry in the area of flavours and ingredients for over 27 years. Dr. Maguire was appointed Honorary Lecturer at the Food Science department of Stellenbosch University in 2006, and has served on SAAFoST council since 2003. She was Organising Chair in 2005 for the Stellenbosch Congress, and became the first female President in SAAFoST’s history in 2007. Dr. Maguire has been a strong supporter of student activities. During her extremely active time as president, the association hosted the IUFoST World Congress and she was responsible for organising a very successful Congress Exhibition and played an active role in securing sponsors.
Member – Professor Mariusz Piskula, Poland
Professor Mariusz Piskula is the Director of the Institute of Animal Reproduction and Food Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw. Professor Mariusz major interests include the effective merging of chemistry and food technology sciences with medical sciences. He is an IAFoST Fellow, a Corresponding Member of the Polish Academy of Sciences, currently the Vice President of The Committee on Food Sciences of the Polish Academy of Sciences and a member of the FoodForce, informal association of directors of the European research entities dealing with food science and technology.
Member – Dr. Lara Hanna Wakim, Lebanon
Dr. Lara Hanna Wakim is an Associate Professor and Dean of the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences at the Holy Spirit University of Kaslik, Lebanon. She is the Vice-President of the Global Confederation of Higher Education Associations for Agricultural and Life Sciences-2015 and Member of its Steering Committee. She served as Head of Food Science Department at USEK and as Responsible of the International Relations. Dr. Wakim is Member of the National Committee of Agri-Food Industries at the Lebanese Ministry of Agriculture, an Active Member at the Lebanese Standards Institution at the Lebanese Ministry of Industry, and Member of the Lebanese Association of Food Scientists and Technologists. Her research interests are primarily focused on consumer perceptions and attitude toward food safety in Lebanon.
IAFoST Academy President: Professor Ruth Oniang’o, Kenya
Ruth Oniang’o is Professor of Food and Nutritional Sciences. She is educated in the USA and Kenya (Washington State University Pullman and University of Nairobi), founder and Editor-in-Chief of the African Journal of Food, Agriculture, Nutrition and Development (AJFAND), founder and Director of Rural Outreach Africa, an NGO working to uplift the lives of resource poor smallholder farmers, especially women, and creating jobs for the young. She has served in advisory capacity for various UN agencies, the World Bank, Kenya Government and Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Professor Oniang’o is an IAFoST Fellow, and a winner of two national medals in Kenya, 2014 IFAMA (International Food and Agribusiness Management Association) award for a lifetime of distinguished service and 2014 Fortune magazine’s ’30 Women Achievers’ globally in Food and Drink.
