Membership in the International Union of Food Science and Technology is open to all nations on the basis of one representative body from each nation or defined territory. With over 75 members countries, five regional groupings (EFFoST in Europe, WAAFoST in Africa, FIFSTA in Asia, MENAFoST for the Middle East and North Africa and ALACCTA in Latin America) and representing more than 300,000 food scientists and technologists worldwide, IUFoST is the world voice of food science and technology. It also provides a unique community of food science and technology professionals dedicated to IUFoST’s vision to Strengthen Global Food Science and Technology for Humanity.
Through IUFoST’s mission to promote international co-operation and information exchange, to provide education and training to food scientists and technologists around the world and to promote professionalism and profession organization among food scientists and technologists, they can participate in a wide range of opportunities to provide
- scientific expertise in expert working groups and preparation of scientific information bulletins and other publications on current topics such as food fraud, obesity, nanotechnology, and biotechnology, as well as
- global leadership through, amonst other things, assisting with IUFoST’s biennial World Food Congresses and other workshops, symposia and events, developing guidelines for professional conduct in the food science industry, provision of core curricula and accreditation expertise, and other IUFoST education-related programmes, including distance education, the Global Food Safety Curricula Initiative (GFSCI), and visiting professorships.
IUFoST members generously volunteer many hours in support of our programming. In the process, they have the opportunity to network with colleagues from around the world and across food science and technology disciplines; participate as speakers, presenters and/or panelists; represent IUFoST at world-class events presented, sponsored and/or endorsed by IUFoST; and become part of the global efforts to improve food safety and security.
They are eligible to be nominated and elected into the International Academy of Food Science and Technology (IAFoST). Through IUFoST competitions, food science and technology students and young scientists are encouraged to expand their horizons and gain exposure to the wider profession. The newly inaugurated Early Career Scientists Section of IAFoST is building a new community for young scientists around the world and will provide them with opportunities to join in and further the IUFoST vision and mission.
